Yet another good reason to socialize your dog

I often find myself talking to new puppy owners about properly training and socializing their dog.  I have some people tell me that they don’t want their dog to like people because it is a guard dog.  There is nothing wrong with having a guard dog, but it should still be socialized and under your control at all times.  A dog that tries to attack anyone and everyone besides the owner is NOT a guard dog.  It is a huge liability.  Properly trained guard dogs, defend their area or property but are still under the owners control.

Today my last patient of the day was a very unsocialized, very large, guard dog that is very ill.  Due to extreme aggressiveness he must be treated for his illness at home, by his owners.  Most dogs with his disorder are hospitalized, and even with hospitalization, some die.  This dog is too aggressive for my staff to handle without serious risk of human injury.    We also must think of the dog.  Placing him in the hospital would be too stressful for him and for other patients.

I urge all dog owners to properly train and socialize their dogs.  If the veterinarian and their staff cannot handle your pet, we cannot effectively treat their medical problems.  We know that some dogs behave well at home, but really hate the vet.  Most are simply frightened.  Sometimes it helps to bring your dog to the clinic, just for a “fun” visit”.  This helps desensitize frightened pets.  Bring the pet to the clinic, and instead of a shot, they get a treat and a few pats on the head.  You may have to do this many times before your pets apprehension decreases.

For more dog training help see the links on the right.  Some people really like Cesar Millans training methods.  Honestly, I prefer Victoria Stillwell.  But both have some great ideas.

I am trying to update the blog more frequently, is anyone reading?

Help me find a home!

Dr. Adams found this very sweet female pitbull wandering around on St. Johns and Lovers Lane.  We are trying to find her owners.  If anyone out there recognizes this dog please contact the clinic.  If her owners are not located she will be available for adoption.  She will be spayed, vaccinated and dewormed free of charge.  She is about 5-6 years old and seems to be very friendly. The clock is ticking and if a suitable home is not found we may have to euthanize her.

Maddie… a happy ending

Maddie was found abandoned near an irrigation canal, starving, and with severe mange. She was just a puppy, alone, scared and sick.  Maddie had not had much luck in her young life, her luck finally turned. She was found by people that cared enough to take her in even though she looked like this:

Her new people could see that she was a beautiful, playful, exuberant, girl.  After many long weeks of treatment for demodectic mange Maddie looks like this:

Even after months of treatment, Maddie still wags her tail when she comes to the clinic.  Maddie and her owners deserve a big pat on the head for perseverance!

For more information on demodectic mange see the link to your right.
